ABOUT
My name is Stephanie Bete. My artist “alias” is my late father’s name. I grew up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and have lived in NYC most of my adult life.
I love coffee shops, bookstores, beer, 90s music and fashion, weird 80s/90s movies, old/antiquated stuff and ways of doing things, either being an extremely lazy couch potato OR a spontaneous maniac (no grey area), and I like to annoy my friends talking about how much I want to trade in my smartphone for a Nokia.
As a little girl, I loved making drawings and comics inspired by the eccentric finds on my father’s coffee table; Edward Gorey, Charles Addams, Gary Larson, MAD magazine, Shel Silverstein, and “SCARY STORIES to Tell in the Dark.” The characteristic crisp, black lines of illustrations and comics always delighted me and (I realized at some point) influenced my style when I began painting in my 20s. Other influences include Tim Burton and Ren & Stimpy.
Enough about me, thanks for stopping by!
